"…..a faithful envoy brings healing" – Proverbs 13:17
When it comes to the care of the orphans, one of my most pressing concerns is the ongoing need for vaccinations and medications for the more serious conditions which involve hospital stays and surgery. We are the orphans' "earthly parents" and like you we must do all we can to not only keep the children healthy, but also to restore the health of every child that becomes ill.
Regardless of whether it is a virus or a bacteria, illnesses are contagious and impossible to totally wipe out when so many children are living together. Like every family, when one child contracts measles or even the common cold, everyone is exposed. We are able to reduce many of the risks in our Hope Homes through vaccines.
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine: These are highly contagious viruses; without immunization, 90 percent of the children will get it. They must be administered between 12-15 months and 4-6 years of age.
- HAV and HBV (Hepatitis A & B): Hepatitis is a deadly virus that causes inflammation of the liver; it is contracted through contaminated food and water. Because the symptoms are flu-like, others are exposed before a diagnosis is made.
- Tetanus: This is a bacteria that is difficult to detect until it has been living in the body for 3 – 8 days. The vaccine must be re-administered every 10 years.
- Tuberculosis: This is a bacterial infection contracted through the air. This vaccine must be administered prior to age four. Since many children arrive at the Hope Homes when they are older, the vaccine is not effective. We take preventative measures. The biggest problem with this disease is the long-term care required to cure it. It is very expensive.
Our long-term goal is to one day have a fund completely dedicated to caring for the medical needs; that is not yet a reality for us. When the children come to us, many already have scabies, dermatitis, polio or anemia due to malnutrition. They require immediate attention – often a special diet and medications. Many children are alive today because they were rescued in time for us to get them proper treatment. God is good!
Praise God for people who see the need with their hearts and respond in prayer and with financial gifts whenever possible! God hears your prayers and multiplies every gift given!
"Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For The Lord has comforted His people, and will have mercy on His afflicted" (Isaiah 49:13).
