“…Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them…but they were terrified…and supposed they had seen a spirit” (Luke 24:36-37)
They thought He was a ghost! They were hiding out after the crucifixion when suddenly Jesus is standing in their midst offering His peace to them. They were excited to see Him, but could not believe their own eyes and ears. So, Jesus said:
“Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? (Luke 24:38)
Imagine how frustrated Jesus had to have been when He was standing right in front of them – flesh and blood – and they still weren’t sure that it was He. But Jesus was patient with them, as always, and said:
“Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have “(Luke 24:39).
Even as they were rejoicing over Jesus being alive, He still asked for some food. He wanted to make sure that when He left them, there would be no doubt in their minds when they shared with the world that He died, was buried and rose on the third day! He wanted all their questions answered before He ascended into heaven.
What separates Christianity from all other religions is that our Savior, Jesus Christ rose from the dead. If He had not resurrected, you and I would have nothing to talk about!
“Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven” (Luke 24:51).
