The children at our Hope Homes love sports. Whenever they receive used uniforms from the US, it's like Christmas. They put those jerseys and shorts on, and they don't ever want to take them off. They wear them for every sport and every activity, no matter if it requires a uniform; some kids even sleep in them when they first get them!
- Kripa Soccer Team
Since Kripa is our largest Hope Home, the children are able to put together soccer, softball and volleyball teams, even winning some high profile tournaments! In 2010, the boys and girls softball teams took first place in the 27th Junior National Softball Championship. Just a few years before, in 2007, the soccer and softball teams took first place in the Rajasthan State Tournament. City officials held an impromptu parade when the teams returned from their victories.
Now India's favorite sports are making it to our smaller Hope Homes as well. Thanks to generous donors providing everything from soccer balls to playground sets, all Hopegivers children receive the benefits of team sports. Recently, the Hopegivers office in India was able to purchase cricket equipment for the children of Naya Geet Hope Home. Who knows, now maybe we'll have a star cricket team too?
This summer, donors provided jump ropes and Frisbees to some of our rural Hope Homes. The kids in these areas rarely see Americans; they definitely didn't know what a Frisbee was! The older children quickly figured out how to throw a Frisbee and helped the younger ones, who were trying to throw it upside down.
Last Christmas, a team visiting a Hope Home in the state of Delhi noticed that they had an old, rickety playground set. Sure, it was in working order, but for how much longer? So as a special Christmas present to go with the Hope Chests, that home got a new playground set!
But for those less inclined to sports, don't worry! Occasionally we are able to purchase board games for the kids, including Parcheesi and Chess. Did you know that both games were invented in India? Games such as these tend to have a longer shelf life than sports equipment, so they don't need to be bought as often.
The children in our Hope Homes throughout India are blessed with sports equipment, board games, and more throughout the year. It is such a joy for us to present them with these chances to enjoy their childhood. Sports teach them cooperation, resilience, discipline, sportsmanship and other virtues they'll need in life. It is our goal to help all of our children spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. This is just another way that donors have helped us meet all their needs. Thank you!
