“He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done” (Proverbs 19:17).
I remember when Mary first came to the orphanage in 2004. She was 12, but so tiny that no one would have guessed that to be her age. Like so many of our children, Mary’s father died in 2000 and left her mother to feed Mary and her two brothers. As hard as she tried, she could not provide food on a daily basis for her little family.
One of our pastors lived in the same village where Mary’s mother would go for weekly prayer meetings; she had become a Christian years before. Mary’s mother shared her desperate situation with the pastor who suggested that the children be placed in orphanages to keep them from starving. When Mary’s mother approached her about going to an orphanage, Mary resisted. She didn’t want to leave her mother. But Hopegivers promised to feed Mary, shelter her and give her an education so she had choices in life outside of being a beggar or day laborer like her mother.
Mary says, “ I finally went home to see my mother in 2010 after I graduated from seminary, but went back to Kota because the head office asked me to become part of the administrative staff. I love it here; I never want to leave.
“I would not have the skills at my job today if Sam Sir (Dr. Samuel) had not taken me in. I would like people in the United States to know that there are many you see walking along the roads in India who have no one to help them. But if you help Sam Sir, then we are able to take in more children like me. When you give to Sam Sir, you save children from a life that consists of wandering the roads looking for something to eat and some shelter for the night. All children should get a chance to know God like I did so they too can serve their country for God.”
Mary is a hard worker and appreciates every opportunity she is given to grow. Thank you for allowing us to nurture a hungry 12 year old and educate her so she is able to give back today. That’s what the Hope Packs do for every orphan. They don’t just provide school supplies – they give for a lifetime to a life worth saving.
Thank you for all you already do; please pray for us as we are struggling to collect enough funds necessary to purchase Hope Packs for this school season. Please pray that hearts are touched by lives like Mary so that more lives can be touched.
