When I look for a new car I want it to be economical to drive. I am not going to buy a vehicle that gets 4 miles per gallon; I want a car that gives me 30 miles to the gallon! God is also looking for believers who will go the extra mile for Him!
“And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain” (Matthew 5:41).
When a Roman officer told a soldier to walk an extra mile and the soldier refused, he was disciplined. When God asks us to go the extra mile for Him, He wants it to be a heart decision – not something we do because we feel forced. If we are saved we are already living in the Kingdom of God. That means we are living under the rule of God in all areas of our lives and as citizens of God’s Kingdom, we are expected to go the extra mile. The harvest is so much more plentiful than the seeds we sow. God needs extra mile workers willing to bring that abundant harvest into the Kingdom.
Our Father teaches us that we are not to give in order to get something in return. Our focus for giving money, time and energy is to advance the Kingdom of God, not to receive some personal benefit. Successful living for the believer is defined as doing things for those who cannot repay us. The world does not define success this way. It teaches that God’s way is too risky, not safe to go that extra mile, and you will surely be taken advantage of! God’s way, the Kingdom way, teaches us to dream bigger than what is practical and give more than what you think is necessary.
When you are a person that goes the extra mile, you will not have any competition on that stretch of the road, no traffic jams. Not many choose to live the Kingdom way, but if you really want to experience the joy of the Lord, do more than is expected of you.
Which kind of believer are you? Do you give just what is required or necessary at work, home, with your neighbors or even strangers or do you give over and above what is expected of you?
“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again”(Luke 6:38).
