Dr. Samuel Thomas, born in 1967, is known throughout India as a leading humanitarian. Following in the footsteps of his father Dr. M. A. Thomas – Founder of Hopegivers International – Dr. Samuel is second generation visionary for the organization.
Dr. Samuel, a passionate leader, speaker and author daily walks out his heart’s desire to raise and train One Million Orphan Leaders Worldwide. He began ministering alongside his father as a very young man. Thirty years later he continues to work toward fulfilling the vision of “One Million Arrows” for God’s quiver; a dream that continues to fuel the explosive growth of Hopegivers International. There are thousands of Gospel plants throughout several developing nations. The vision is to see one million needy children rescued from brothels, slums, and sex trafficking so they will one day become the One Million Orphan Leaders Worldwide by 2030!
Dr. Samuel is not only the spokesperson for the ministry, he also oversees the day-to-day operations of the ministry. With strong communication skills and a management style that encourages personal excellence, it is no surprise that his ministry team – in India and in the United States – work diligently to reach their full potential in order to rescue the young “fragments” of society – the orphaned, abandoned and at-risk – in order to further the Gospel. Every orphan is raised to be God-fearing, financially independent, lovers of their nation, and servant leaders whether they choose the path of a pastor, nurse, businessman, or parent. These children become men and women who contribute to the betterment of their communities as they care for others less fortunate than themselves. They become nation loving citizens of God and man.
Dr. M. A. Thomas told his son, “This goal of one million is bigger than you or I! But I believe we are to pursue it with all our hearts so that, by the grace of God, it will one day take place. It may not happen in our lifetimes, but it will happen.'” We have chosen 2030 as a reasonable goal to work towards, but only God knows when the one million will be fulfilled. Our God is a Way Maker and we are privileged to have our personal stories weaved into His plan!
Dr. Samuel says: “I was drafted into my role in the ministry by the Holy Spirit. I was trying to reconcile God’s call on my life in ministry with my aspiration to become a pediatric surgeon after college. When I told my parents of my dilemma, my parents told me that God didn’t need my money; He wanted me! That’s how it all got started.”
Dr. Samuel’s education includes undergraduate work at Columbia International University, a B.A. from Liberty University, and a Doctorate in Divinity from Antioch Seminary. He has also received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Liberty University and an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from North Greenville University.
During his tenure with Hopegivers, Dr. Samuel has been instrumental in establishing approximately 190 schools throughout India; overseeing 47 Hope Homes that house nearly 6,000 orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children. He opened a hospital, a nursing school and established 45 Bible Colleges, including the Emmanuel Theological Seminary in Rajasthan. He also expanded the ministry work into other areas of need like the Dowry Castaway Women, HopeVision and Martyr’s Legacy ministries.
An accomplished singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter, Dr. Samuel has recorded 15 devotional song albums in the Hindi and Malayalam languages. He conducts leadership seminars in India, the Middle East and in the United States. He is an internationally sought-after conference speaker.
Dr. Samuel Thomas is married to the former Shelley Lucas from Harpswell, Maine. They have two sons, Steven Andrew and Timothy Abraham.
“Jesus asks us to experience Him so that our attitude will be laced with joy no matter the difficulty or the challenge.” — Dr. Samuel Thomas
